Pownal is the southwestern most town in Vermont.  It is bordered by Williamstown, Massachusetts and Petersburg, New York.  A 5 minute drive south of Bennington, Vermont this small community covers a large area geographically in relation to it’s population.  US route 7 South runs directly through the middle.  The Long Trail, a long distance hiking trail begins on the border of Pownal and Massachusetts.

Pownal has a long and storied history stretching back to settlement by the Mahican people.  It later became part of a fur trading community that was centered in the Albany, New York area.  Eventually it became colonized by settlers moving up from Massachusets, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
